Dyed Leather Coral 9/23/07 Bob, <Sorry, Sara here.> I
need some help identifying this coral. I've looked for any picture
in the web that resembles it and I can't find one. Is it a colt or
maybe a leather? <Yes, it looks like some kind of leather coral.>
When I purchased it all it said was that it's a soft coral. I am
sending a couple of pictures so that maybe you can identify it.
<Leather corals are difficult to ID, but it's definitely dyed. Which
is unfortunate since this is very bad for the coral. It should get
better though after it sheds.> Thanks Elsa <De nada,
Sara M.> |
Ooooh, lordie! Dat's peenk!

Coral ID 7/21/07 Could you please tell me what this coral
is? When I purchased it they called it a pincushion, but I have not
been successful finding anything about it under that name.
<Sarcophyton, Leather coral, Toadstool coral.> Thanks,
Bellinda <Anytime, Andrea> |

Help Me ID Unknown "Creature" – 07/22/07 <Hi Kirsty, Mich here.>
I belong to a forum and have posted these pics but no one has been able
to help me ID this "creature". <OK.> If you can assist me with my
query I would be very grateful! <I will certainly try.> It doesn't
move around, stays in one spot and does not appear to annoy the Zoa it
appears to be attached to! <OK. Not a whole lot of info to work with,
but everything helps. Really this more of a guess at this point, but
perhaps this is a Sarcophyton. Do the polyps ever withdraw, i.e. does it
ever look like a ball as opposed to a porcupine?> Thank you for your
help, <Not sure how much help it is.> Kirsty. PS, I have two
Eunice worms in a nano; <Yikes!> can you recommend leaving them
be <Only if you want to keep a species tank for Eunice worms! Some
are beneficial scavengers, but many are predatory!> or trying to trap
them? If the latter, what is the most successful way to trap one?!
<Typically the borrow must be found and the worm not so delicately
extracted... usually not a pretty picture I'm afraid. Good luck!

"Creature" It IS a Sarcophyton! – 07/22/07 Hi Mich, <<Hi
Kirsty!>> thanks for such a prompt reply! <<Welcome!>> <Really
this more of a guess at this point, but perhaps this is a Sarcophyton.
Do the polyps ever withdraw, i.e. does it ever look like a ball as
opposed to a porcupine?> Fantastic! Just checked, and because the
lights aren't on yet, it is doing just that! <<Yay!>> God you're
good! <<Heee! I try!>> So is it a young one that will grow and
therefore need to somehow be moved to a better part of the tank or could
it be a small species? <<Likely a baby, and you will want to move it
away from the Zoas at some point in the not too distant future. Many
Sarcophytons are highly allelopathic and will inhibit the growth of
others near them. You can chip it off the LR using a chisel or try
cutting it off, but it may regrow in the same spot if you cut it.>>
<Typically the borrow must be found and the worm not so delicately
extracted... usually not a pretty picture I'm afraid. Good luck!>
Oh.....I know two of their bolt holes and they're in the main structure
of my LR....I have been able to entice one of them out before with food
and got It to come out by the length of approximately 5 cm.....So, if I
did catch the head end and gently pull, (yeuk!), is this the best way?
<<Should work...IF you can catch the head.>> I had heard that if
there are any bits left in that they would regrow into others. Not sure
on this, but surely only the head end would do this? <<Regeneration
is possible, but it is highly unlikely for the head to regrow.>>
Thanks again Mich, <<You are most welcome.>> you're a star.
<<Nah, just a good guesser. But thanks for the compliment anyway! Mich>>

<Kirsty> No really, you've answered some questions for me that others
couldn't so thank you very very much! <You are most welcome! I am
happy that I have been able to help you. It is very nice to get follow
up replies like yours. It makes doing this even more rewarding and thank
you very much for your kind words! Mich> Kirsty. |

Soft Coral, worm, algae ID 12/6/06 Dear Crew, I was
wondering if you could help me identify my new soft coral. It was sold
to me as a Sarcophyton sp., but it looks more like a Sinularia sp. to
me. I have attached pictures for reference. <Is not a Sarcophyton
for sure... Likely is a Sinularia species... definitely a Alcyoniid>
On another note, I was watching my tank the other night and I noticed
what I believe are worms, possibly bristle worms, swimming through the
tank. They were swimming rather quickly with a cork-screwing motion.
<Good description...> I couldn't find any reference to similar
behavior, so I was curious about it. I have also attached a picture of
one of the worms. (I couldn't get a picture of one swimming, so it is a
picture of the worm on the glass.) <Is an errantiate polychaete
(there are thousands of species) of some sort> Also, I am having
trouble with, but I am not sure what type it is. I can't find anything
that looks similar to it. It grows all over my live rock and the glass
of the aquarium. I have also attached a picture as a reference. <Are
Blue-greens... Cyanobacteria...> My parameters are as follows:
55 gallon tank with 120 watts NO fluorescents Temperature: 79° F
Nitrite, Nitrate, Ammonia, Copper: 0 ppm pH: 8.2 dKH: 10°
Calcium: 550ppm <Way too high...> Specific Gravity 1.026
Weekly 10% water changes with RO water. Top-off twice daily with RO
water. (About a quart of a water each time.) Thank you for your
time, Daniel <Mmm, please do take a read on WWM re the groups,
situation mentioned above... Bob Fenner> |
