The Silversides, family Atherinidae

The Silversides are principally marine fishes, found worldwide in tropical to temperate seas. As a group they're important forage and human food fishes, with some common table items for many cultures. Topsmelts, Grunions....

 

Atherinops affinis (Ayres 1860), the Topsmelt Silverside. Eastern Pacific; Canada to Baja. To fourteen inches in length (most half that). Each jaw bears a single row of teeth, forked at ends. There is a row of 5-8 scales between the two dorsal fins. Origin of anal fin below end of 1st dorsal fin. Birch Aquarium photo.
