 Who's that hiding in/under the sand?

 
Cymbacephalus beauforti (Knapp 1973), Crocodilefish. Western Pacific. To 50 cm. Fishbase coverage. N. Sulawesi image.  


Papilloculiceps longiceps (Cuvier 1829), Tentacled or Carpet Flathead or Crocodilefish. To one meter in length. Western Indian Ocean; Red Sea, South Africa, Madagascar. The most common of nine species of platycephalids in the Red Sea. Occasionally offered as a juvenile, but a real vacuum-cleaner feeder even when small. Red Sea and aquarium pix.

Thysanophrys carbunculus (Valenciennes 1833), Papillose Flathead. To 40 cm. Lives in muddy, shallow habitats. N. Sulawesi image.
