Bluestripe or Fremblii
Butterfly... Using WWM – 1/2/08
I am considering adding a Bluestripe Butterfly to my established FOWLR tank.
<Is a neat Hawaiian endemic...>
Inhabitants include a Hippo Tang, Yellow Tang, Flame Angel, clowns, Royal Gramma
and a Mandarin. Will a Bluestripe co-exist with these fish?
<Likely so... if there's enough room, cover... at least a hundred gallons...>
What is the temperament of a BSB. Will it devour all the pods-thus starving the
mandarin?
<Maybe>
What is the general care of these fish?
<Posted>
I am getting the sense that they are hard to come by-any thoughts on this.
<Not all that common on the reef, in the trade...>
Thanks for your help and have a great year. Steve

Klein's butterfly fish
Hello Bob
Didn't expect to be asking you another question so soon, but I just got finished
reading your latest article in FAMA, so here goes. Are Klein's butterfly fish
considered fairly reef-safe?
<IMO/E yes>
I have never heard them mentioned with the reef-safe
butterflies.
<A rare B/F in the hobby... Only found in Hawai'i, and only in limited numbers>
You mentioned that will eat Aiptasia anemones in reef systems.
While I don't have a problem with the anemones, I can think of no other fish to
make a captive coral system look more realistic than a REAL butterfly. It would
be going into a fully loaded [with coral] 180 gal. reef. Do you think it would
work?
<Yes, worth trying in this setting>
By the way I really enjoy your articles & FAMA magazine.
Keep up the good work, and thanks a million
<Ah. Do read over the mass of Butterfly articles, FAQs accumulated here: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/BFsBestWrst.htm
and beyond. Bob Fenner> Joe
Aloha! (Errors in Hawaiian B/F article!)
Hey there Bob .. Howzit? I was reading through your Hawaiian fishes
article in the latest FAMA and had a few questions.
<Thanks for this input Charles. Haven't seen the most recent ish>
I think you got the two longnosed butterflyfishes names confused, the true
longnose with the very long nose is F. longirostris, not F. flavissimus as
you stated.
<Yikes, what a goof-up... will have to check original... it's posted on our WWM site: http://www.wetwebmedia.com/bstbfshi.htm
Mmm, seem to have them right there... oh boy>
I was wondering how often you have seen C. trifascialis in the main
Hawaiian Islands?
<Let's see... never to my recollection. In looking at my slides of the species: Aquarium, Heron Is. QLD, Seychelles, Red Sea... Probably listed to make listing complete... data from fishbase.org>
I have never seen it, though it does occur in the
Northwest Hawaiian Islands around stands of Acropora on which it feeds. Is
this a fish that collectors would travel up there for or do they find them
around here? Just curious ...
<Never shipped out of Hawai'i as far as I'm aware... In fact, over the thirty or so years that I am familiar with, very few Butterflyfishes are regularly offered out of your home State... Diver pay is about 75 cents each for most species...>
Hope all is well in Sun Diego!
<Yes my friend, hope to see, chat with you soon. Bob Fenner>
Aloha!
