Stegastes acapulcoensis (Fowler 1944), the Acapulco Major. Eastern Pacific; Baja California to Peru. To five and a half inches in length. To variably brown/tan adults from gorgeous blue juveniles. A changeling from juv. to adult in Costa Rica (Pacific side) 2011

Cirrhitus rivulatus (Valenciennes 1846), the Giant Hawkfish. Tropical eastern Pacific; Sea of Cortez to Columbia. To twenty inches in length. In Mexico we catch and eat the "China Mero", but it can be kept in very large marine systems. Occasionally collected in Baja. Galapagos 2007

Bodianus diplotaenia (Gill 1862), the Mexican or Cortez Hogfish is more and more available. A real hardy species; but be forewarned, it is a real pig, getting big fast (to two and a half feet in length) from eating most all the food you can provide. Eastern Pacific. Costa Rica (Pacific side) 2011
