A SEM (Scanning Electron Micrograph) of Biddulphia

These are single celled (though some are colonial) silicate skeleton based algae; only able to be certifiably identified via microscopic examination. Macroscopically in reefs and aquariums they often resemble a gelatinous mass of fine filaments; often glommed on to other algae and vascular plants.
