Algae ID, BGA cont. 9/18/09
Hello,
<Howsit?>
I was wondering if you could take a look at these pics and let me know what you think. I don't think it is red slime; it is very circular and callus like coralline algae but then grows the little furry tuffs.
<The pix show both coralline and BGA>
You can not pull off the little furry tuffs but my lawnmower blenny loves to eat it.<Interesting...>
But it is taking over slowly. It does not grow on the glass walls or sand only the rock and shells, it seems to like to grow over the purple coralline algae. You can see it is turning white (dyeing) on the return pipe. I recently added 2 15K T5's and did a 30% water change. Also with the temps out here in California my tank is running at about 80 to as high as maybe 85 degrees.

3' lawnmower blenny
4' Red Coris Wrasse
Banded starfish
Snails and hermits

2) 420 nm T5's
2) 460 nm T5's
1) 10K T5's

I would like to know if you have seen this before, what you think of it and how I might manage it, besides better husbandry.
Thank you,
James

Re: Algae ID 09/24/09
Hello
<Hi there>
Thank you for your assistance. I have a couple more questions.
Will it hurt to keep dosing with Seachem's
Reef builder- powder-in makeup water
Advantage calcium- powder-in makeup
Complete- liquid-directly
Calcium- liquid-directly
<Mmm, no... but I would not use all of these at the same time... I'd use just one product in a given interval... week/s>
I stopped dosing with Reef Plus for the time being and will rinse and closely monitor feeding. But my skimmer is not pulling more than a half inch per day. It's an octopus NW 150
<Not to worry. Skimmers do more/less under varying conditions>
Also do you know if testing for TDS can be done with a turbidimeter as I have access to one at work
<Cannot do... Total Dissolved Solids can be made up of molecules too small to register as turbidity... Turbidity might well be composed of matter other than TDS...>
I get my makeup water and water for salt mix from the machine in front of the grocery store. I will be testing it for phos and TDS but it is supposed to be RO charcoal UV and what not. Do you think this should be good source water.
<It's likely fine... but if you're going through a good deal of water... And/or if your plain tap is so bad... I'd get/use your own RO>
Also I moved my return pipe close to the glass. My snails made it over and have nearly cleared the whole pipe off in two days
<Ah good>
Again. Thanks for the help
James
<Certainly welcome James. Do read over the files on WWM re RO use. Bob Fenner>

Algae plus clump
Hi,
I've been able to i.d. every strange critter in my reef tank but this one has me "stumped." Any idea what it is? It changes shape by branching and looking very tree-like.
John from Ottawa
<Looks to me to be some grouping of filaments and BGA. Bob Fenner>

Re: Algae plus clump
Wow - that was fast. Thank you so much.
<We aim to please. Welcome. BobF>

Dinoflagellates? Reading? 6/21/09
Hello,
<Howsit?>
I was wondering if you could take a look at the attached photos and let me know if I am dealing with an outbreak of dinoflagellates.
<... need a microscopic pic... cells with two flagella, mid-band and apical... This is likely mostly Cyanobacteria >
This stuff appeared after I added a couple of Koralia 4s to my tank.
<Coincidental?>
I have a 5 in DSB that consists of fine live sand. The K 4s stirred up quite a bit of sand for the first week and I'm wondering if it kicked up something to trigger this.
<Maybe... nutrient influx>
I have not added or changed anything else in the tank and all water parameters are in the normal ranges.
<... normal>
Picture 33 shows the stuff rising off the rocks when I turned off the pumps. If it is dinoflagellates, please let me know what plan of action I should take to remove it from my tank.
Thank you,
<... please read on WWM re Algae control. Bob Fenner>

Please help id this macroalgae -- 06/15/09
Dear WWM,
<Big H>
Hi, i already search in WWM, but i still cant id what is the exact macro algae that i have? Picture Caulerpa 1-2 i don't think it was a c.plorifera, then what is it?
<Not Prolifera...>
Pic Caulerpa 3-4 i don't know.
<Perhaps a Halimeda sp.>
Pic 5,6,7 even though it looks like c.racemosa, but i also think it was racemosa, please take a look at the bunch, it was not rounded like racemosa, but it kind like flat at the top of the bunch. What is it?
<Caulerpa peltata>
For the red macroalgae, i also not sure, is it a Gracilaria?
<No>
If it, then is it good at removing nitrates and phosphate?
<Likely so>
Which one from the macroalgae that i have that will not going sexual, is it only the red macroalgae?
<None if the system is maintained "properly", the algae kept cut back regularly. BobF>
Thank you very much.
Regards,
Hengky
